(The Bread and Wine of Shadow)
[For the Ritus Magna: Coniuratio Umbrae et Famis]
Purpose:
These are not mere foods — they are edible spells, final acts of sealing after the rite.
-
The bread symbolizes binding the body's transformation — flesh fortified by darkness.
-
The wine seals the blood pact internally — spirit made sovereign through consumption of the black current.
Timing of Preparation:
-
Both the bread and wine must be prepared one day before the Ritus Magna — during the last hour of the waning moon (the eve before the new moon).
-
This allows them to ferment and mature in darkness, soaking in the energies of descent before being consumed at dawn after the ceremony.
I. Panis Umbrae.
(Bread of the Shadow)
Ingredients:
-
2 cups dark rye flour (symbol: ancient grain of graveyards, earthiness, strength from death)
-
1/2 cup black sesame seeds (symbol: night seeds, protection, anchoring soul to body)
-
2 tablespoons blackstrap molasses (symbol: the sweetness hidden in decay, wealth of the underworld)
-
1 teaspoon activated charcoal powder (food-grade) (symbol: purification through black fire, binding toxin and spirit alike)
-
3/4 cup warm blood-red wine or strong brewed black tea (symbol: infusion of spirit into matter)
-
1 packet dry yeast (symbol: living transformation, fermentation of will)
-
1 teaspoon salt (symbol: boundary setting, preservation of power)
-
1 tablespoon olive oil (cold-pressed) (symbol: sacredness of flesh, vitality retained)
Preparation:
-
Awakening the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm red wine (or black tea) with the yeast. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes until frothy — whisper silently the word "Vigeas" ("May you live") as the yeast awakens. -
Mixing the Dry Ingredients:
In a large black or dark-coloured bowl, combine the rye flour, black sesame seeds, charcoal powder, and salt. -
Binding:
Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients. Pour in the yeast mixture, molasses, and olive oil.
Stir with a wooden spoon (or hands) until a sticky, heavy dough forms. -
Kneading:
Knead the dough by hand for 10 minutes, focusing each motion on binding your sovereign will into the bread. Feel the dough absorb the black current. -
First Rise:
Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a black cloth, and let rise in darkness for 1 hour or until doubled. -
Shaping:
Shape into a small round loaf — score a simple vertical line (symbolizing "descent into the self") across the top. -
Second Rise:
Allow it to rise another 30 minutes while you quietly burn storax or myrrh nearby. -
Baking:
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30–35 minutes, until a hollow sound is heard when tapping the bottom. -
Cooling:
Let cool completely in darkness, wrapped in black cloth. Do not taste until after the ceremony.
II. Vinum Tenebrarum.
(Wine of Darkness)
Ingredients:
-
1 bottle deep blood-red wine (symbol: living essence, blood of will)
-
1 tablespoon dried blackcurrants (symbol: deepening the blood, protection, strength)
-
1 teaspoon dried mugwort (symbol: dream-walking, opening gates of the hidden)
-
1 teaspoon dried wormwood (symbol: bitterness of truth, clarity of inner vision)
-
1 black star anise pod (symbol: warding, sealing against corruption)
-
3 whole cloves (symbol: pain transformed into power)
Preparation:
-
Infusion Setup:
Warm the wine gently in a black or heavy pot (do not boil). -
Herb Addition:
Add the blackcurrants, mugwort, wormwood, star anise, and cloves. -
Simmering:
Let the wine gently infuse over the lowest heat possible for 15 minutes — stirring three times counter-clockwise (to deepen descent). -
Straining:
Strain the wine through black linen or fine mesh into a black glass bottle or dark decanter. -
Sealing:
Seal tightly and store in total darkness overnight — never expose to light.
Symbolic Notes on Ingredients:
-
Dark Rye and Black Sesame:
Anchor the body deeply into the new Self — flesh reborn in strength and unbreakable grounding. -
Charcoal and Molasses:
Purify and transform inner corruption into hidden wealth. -
Red Wine, Mugwort, Wormwood, Blackcurrant:
Together they deepen spiritual blood, open gates to dreams and hidden sight, while fortifying against dissolution. -
Clove and Star Anise:
Final protection of the inner sanctum — guarding what is newly born.
Consumption During the Ritus Magna:
After the full ritual concludes:
-
After the ceremony, the practitioner tears a piece of the Panis Umbrae (by hand, never cutting) and consumes it slowly, feeling the solidity of the reborn flesh.
-
A single draught of the Vinum Tenebrarum is taken — sealing the blood pact internally.
No other food or drink is to be consumed until at least an hour has passed, preferably not until the following evening.
This anchors the completed work physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Sacred Rule:
"Quod ore sumitur, anima firmatur."
("What is taken by the mouth, is strengthened in the soul.")
